Call for expressions of interest in hosting a JISLAC seminar - March 2009
Background
JISLAC provides funding for the organisation of eight seminars across the UK each year over a five year period (2007 to 2012). These guidelines are for those who wish to organise a seminar under the JISLAC programme.
The seminars:
- aim to fortify Area Studies in our fields, especially when there exists limited or no strong institutional support structure and where colleagues are often scattered across discipline-based departments;
- are expected to attract approximately 30 academic, postgraduate and non-academic participants per meeting;
- provide an informal setting in which researchers living in different regions of Britain may present their work and form regional links;
- are not intended to showcase the work of a University department, but to extend beyond the host institution. Therefore, speakers should not come largely from the institution hosting the event.
How to apply to host a JISLAC seminar
Three seminars each year are allocated to the Caribbean Research Seminar in the North, organised in association with the Society for Caribbean Studies. Institutions are invited to bid to host one of the other seminars to take place in 2010, 2011 or 2012.
Those wishing to host a JISLAC seminar, with an award of £1500 to do so, should:
- Check the existing programme of JISLAC seminars, to ensure that the proposed timing is available. There are currently no seminar slots available before June 2010. It is preferred that no more than one seminar is held in a single month.
- Send an outline (preferably using the seminar proposal template) to the JISLAC Project Officer (jislac@sas.ac.uk) addressing the following:
- the proposed topic, which should have a clear research focus and an innovative approach
- names of speakers, with titles or themes of presentation
- proposed timing (month and year)
- an indication of how the funding allocation is expected to be used, including estimated costs
- any expected dissemination or outreach outcomes, such as a publication, a network etc.
Application deadline
Expressions of interest should reach jislac@sas.ac.uk by Monday 9 March 2009 for consideration at a JISLAC management committee meeting on Wednesday 18 March.
Organisational arrangements
- Each seminar has a nominated organiser, depending on the location, who makes all the arrangements for the event.
- A minimum of three substantial papers are expected to be presented at the seminar, which is normally expected to be a half- or one-day event.
- It is expected that seminars take a broad regional view, rather than focusing on a single country.
- Seminar programmes should be sent to the JISLAC Project Officer before the event for inclusion on the website.
- The allocation of up to £1500 for each seminar will be provided on receipt of a narrative and expenditure report after the event. The report should include details of numbers of attendees and their affiliations, and the number of postgraduates involved. A seminar report form is available on the website.
- Funding can cover speaker travel, travel for postgraduate students, seminar venue, catering, overnight accommodation, and/or dinner for speakers and organisers. Honoraria will not be covered.
- Funding can only be made to the host institution, not to an individual.
- Organisers should arrange for a rapporteur’s report to be provided to JISLAC for its report to the British Academy.
- Seminars may cover topics relating to either Latin America or the Caribbean, or both. An inter-disciplinary approach is preferred. This does not apply to the pre-existing Caribbean Research Seminar in the North events.
- Postgraduate student attendance should be encouraged, possibly as speakers.
- Collaborations across multiple institutions are encouraged, and it is acceptable to combine JISLAC seminars with other events in order to enhance the impact of both. However, bids should not be used to fund all or part of an event that is already being organised by or at the institution.
- The support from JISLAC should be acknowledged on all publicity material for the event.
Reporting
- Organisers should use the seminar report form provided.
- Funding will be allocated following the receipt of the report, which must include an itemised list of expenditure.
- Seminar organisers should retain receipts and invoices and make them available to JISLAC on request.
